Beard care | grooming for the guys

Something for the chaps! When it comes to beard care, you don’t need to spend tons of money to get yourself looking like the best groomed guy in town – just a bit of know-how. I roped in Krishan Parmar, one of my beardy co-workers, to take some hotly-tipped beard-care and shaving products through their paces.

The Real Shave co beard careSUPER SHAVE
The Real Shaving Co keeps beard care simple with their three-step regime. Step 1, exfoliate with their Daily Face Scrub (£4.49, Boots); then step 2, use the Traditional Shave Cream (£4.09, Boots) for an easy shave, before finishing with SPF15 Anti-Ageing Moisturiser (£4.49, Boots) to soothe and protect your skin. You don’t need to be clean shaven to benefit from steps 1 and 2 either. Pop to Boots, Waitrose or Sainsbury’s to get yours.

For Internet shoppers, is a one-stop-shop for grooming and well worth checking out. One of Krishan’s favourite products from the site is Lock Stock and Barrel’s Argan Blend Shave Oil, which I also found on (one of my fave shopping sites) Look Fantastic (£23.95, lookfantastic), which combines argan and natural oils for the ultimate fast dry shave. “Perfect for a quick shave,” he says, “you don’t need a huge amount and the best thing is that because your face isn’t covered in foam, it takes the guesswork out of choosing the shaving line – making beard care so much easier.”

Captain Fawcett beard care

The beard continues to enjoy unprecedented levels of popularity, but there are a few things to remember if you want to keep your facial fuzz looking more hipster than hobo. Trims keep hairs healthy and encourage equal growth, but to keep things slick and conditioned invest in a good beard oil. Krishan tells me it’s not used nearly as often as it should be, and that it’s the best way to keep your beard looking, feeling and smelling amazing. His pick is Gentlemen’s Chuckaboo, The Bludger (£10, Stressed-out guys, try The Sauce Box (£10) from the same range with soothing lavender oil to calm nerves – and itchiness.

With 30 years’ experience in the styling industry, Joseph Lanzante has developed his own luxurious range. Krishan tried the Post Shave Lotion (£14.95, and found it a cooling treat to prevent razor burn.
And finally, probably (definitely) the most awesome beard products out there are from Captain Fawcett. The must-have product to keep your beard as rad as Ricki Hall’s is the Beard Oil Private Stock (£34, – a spiffing blend of sweet almond, jojoba and vitamin E. And for gifting the bearded-boy in your life, opt for the Beard Oil & Folding Pocket Beard Comb Set (£43.50) for keeping his fuzz beautifully buffed, or the Shaving Brush, Razor & Soap Gift Set (£83) for everything his beard has ever wanted.

I’ve also had it on good authority (from the captain himself) that the beard oil can also work wonders for a girls ratty locks!
